Privacy Policy

What we collect, where it lives, and what we will and will not do with it. The plain-English version is on the overview.

Innerfolk is a private journal. You answer one question a day, and what you write stays yours. This page says exactly what we collect, where it lives, and what we will and will not do with it.

We have tried to write it in language you can actually read. If anything here is unclear, email support@innerfolk.co and a person will answer.

The short version

• Your entries are private. We do not read them, sell them, advertise against them, or use them to train AI models.
• Sharing an answer is a separate decision you make one entry at a time.
• You can export everything you have written, at any time, in plain text.
• You can delete your account and everything in it.
• We collect the minimum we need to run the thing.

What we collect

When you join

• Your email address
• Your first name, if you give it
• Payment details — these go to Stripe and never touch our systems. We store only Stripe's customer and subscription identifiers so we know your membership is current.

When you set up

• Which chapters of life you told us are open — work, money, love, parenthood, family, waiting, endings, who you are becoming, your body, ordinary life
• Any subjects you asked us never to raise
• Any dates you told us to be careful around
• How often you want to be asked, and your time zone

As you use it

• What you write
• Which questions you have been shown, and when
• Which days you wrote on

If you choose to share an answer

• The answer itself, with no name attached
• A broad region and an age

Automatically

• Standard web analytics through Google Analytics, which tells us how many people visited a page. It does not know who you are and is not connected to your journal.

Where it lives

Your entries are stored in a file of its own for each member, inside our Google Workspace. Nothing else can read across from one member's file to another.

Everything else — your membership record, your chapters, which questions you have been shown — sits in a separate workbook. Your writing is not in that workbook.

Payments are handled entirely by Stripe. Email is sent through Google Workspace. Both hold their own privacy policies, and both are listed below.

What we will not do

We do not read your entries. Not for quality, not for product research, not out of curiosity. The only circumstance in which a person at Innerfolk would open a member's file is if you asked us to — for example, to recover something.

We do not sell your data. To anyone, for any purpose, ever.

We do not advertise against it. There are no ads in Innerfolk and no advertisers involved in it.

We do not use your writing to train AI models. Not ours, not anybody else's. The questions you are asked were written by people in advance; nothing you write feeds back into them.

We do not share an answer unless you tap to share it. Sharing is one entry at a time, and it is never a default.

What we do with what we collect

Your chapters and your suppressed subjects choose which question you are asked each morning. That is their only purpose.

Your email is used to send you the daily question, the handful of membership emails described below, and nothing else.

What you have already been shown stops you being asked the same thing twice, and lets an old entry come back to you months later.

Shared answers appear to other members with a region and an age attached and nothing more. No name, no profile, no way to reply, and no way to find anything else you wrote.

The emails we send

• The daily question, at the frequency you chose
• A welcome when you join
• A note before your trial ends, and a receipt when you are charged
• A note before each renewal
• Occasional emails at moments that matter — your first entry, a week in, an entry resurfacing, your Annual Edition being ready

You can change how often we ask, or turn the daily question off, in your profile. Membership emails — the ones about money and renewals — cannot be turned off while you are a member, because you need them.

Your writing is yours

Export. Everything you have written downloads as plain text from your profile, any time, with no request needed.

Deletion. Email support@innerfolk.co and we will delete your account, your entries file, and every row connected to you, within 30 days. We will confirm when it is done. If you have shared any answers, tell us and we will remove those too — they carry no name, so we cannot find them without you.

Leaving. Email support@innerfolk.co and we cancel it the same working day. Nothing is retained to tempt you back, and there is no retention offer.

How long we keep things

• Your entries — for as long as you are a member, and until you ask us to delete them
• Your membership record — for as long as you are a member, then seven years after you leave for accounting purposes
• Backups — we take a weekly snapshot and keep twelve weeks, so a deletion may persist in a backup for up to twelve weeks before it ages out
• Shared answers — until you ask us to remove them

Nobody else. There are no advertising networks, data brokers, or analytics vendors beyond the one named.

If you are in Washington State

Washington's My Health My Data Act treats some information about mental and emotional state as health data. Journaling can touch that.

We do not know whether a court would treat what you write as "consumer health data" under that act, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can tell you is what actually happens to it:

• We do not collect anything about your health, and we never ask.
• We do not read your entries, and nothing you write is used to categorise you in any way.
• Nothing you write is sold, shared, advertised against, or used to train AI models.
• You can see everything we hold, export it, and have it deleted, by emailing support@innerfolk.co.

If you are a Washington resident and want to exercise any right under the My Health My Data Act, email support@innerfolk.co and we will act on it within the timeframe the act requires. We will not ask you why.

If you are in the EEA or UK

We process your information on the basis of the contract between us — you cannot be sent a question without an email address to send it to — and, for analytics, your consent.

You have the right to see what we hold, correct it, take it elsewhere, or have it erased. Email support@innerfolk.co.

We are a United States company and do not currently market Innerfolk in the EEA or UK. If that changes we will appoint a representative and say so here.

Children

Innerfolk is not for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect anything from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has an account, email support@innerfolk.co and we will remove it.

Changes

If we change this policy we will email every member before the change takes effect, not after. We will say what changed and why, in the email itself rather than behind a link.
