Terms of Service

What we are selling, what happens if either of us stops, and who owns what you write. You do.

LAST UPDATED 12 SEPTEMBER 2026

These are the terms between you and Innerfolk. We have written them to be read rather than to be survived, and we have tried not to reserve rights we do not intend to use.

If anything here is unclear, email support@innerfolk.co and a person will answer.

1 · What Innerfolk is

Innerfolk is a subscription journal. Every morning we send you one written question chosen for the chapter of life you told us you are in. You answer it privately. At the end of each calendar year, your entries are typeset into a book.

It is not therapy, counselling, or medical care, and it is not a substitute for any of those. If you are struggling, please talk to someone qualified.

2 · Who can join

You need to be 18 or over. One membership is for one person — the questions are chosen for you specifically, and sharing an account defeats the point of it.

3 · The two memberships

Your Annual EditionYours to keep or printPrinted and mailed to you
ShippingWithin the United States

Both include everything the journal does. The only difference is whether your book arrives as a file or in your hands.

4 · The free trial

You get 21 days before anything is charged. A card is required to start, and we email you before the trial ends — we will not let it lapse into a charge without telling you first.

Email us at any point in those 21 days and you are charged nothing.

5 · Paying, and renewing

Membership is billed once a year, in advance, and renews automatically on the anniversary of your first charge.

We email you about 30 days before each renewal, so a renewal should never be a surprise. If it is, tell us and see section 6.

Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card details.

We may change the price. If we do, we will tell you at least 60 days before it affects you, and you can cancel before it does. A price change never applies to a year you have already paid for.

6 · Cancelling, and refunds

To cancel, email support@innerfolk.co. One line is enough — you do not need to give a reason and we will not ask for one.

We process cancellations the same working day, and we always honour the date you wrote to us, not the date we got to it. You keep full access until the end of the term you have paid for.

There is no retention offer and no questionnaire. We are building self-serve cancellation into the journal; until it is there, a person does it for you.

Within the 21-day trial — cancel and you are charged nothing.

Within 30 days of a charge — email support@innerfolk.co and we will refund you in full, no questions asked. This includes renewals. If you did not mean to renew, that is exactly what this is for.

After 30 days — your membership runs to the end of the year you paid for, and does not renew. We do not refund part of a year.

On the Edition tier, if your book has already been printed and mailed when you ask for a refund, we refund the membership less the cost of the book, and you keep the book. We will tell you the figure before we do it.

If we get it wrong — a book that arrives damaged, or does not arrive at all — we reprint and resend it at our cost. Tell us within 60 days of the ship date.

7 · What you write is yours

You own everything you write. We do not claim any rights over it.

You grant us only the narrow permission needed to run the service: to store your entries, to show them back to you, to typeset them into your book, and — only if you tap to share a particular answer — to show that answer anonymously to other members.

That permission ends when you delete your account.

How we handle your writing is set out in the Privacy Policy, which is part of these terms.

8 · What we ask of you

Do not use Innerfolk to break the law, and do not try to break into it.

Shared answers are the one place where what you write is seen by another person. Do not share anything that identifies somebody else, harasses anybody, or is unlawful. We may remove a shared answer without notice, and removing it does not touch your journal.

9 · Taking your writing with you

Everything you have written exports as plain text, at any time, from your profile. No request, no waiting, no format you cannot open.

If you delete your account we delete your entries. Export first if you want to keep them, because after deletion we cannot get them back for you — that is the point of how it is stored.

10 · Your Annual Edition

Your Annual Edition covers a full calendar year, so it is produced after that year ends and arrives in January.

To receive a printed copy you must be on the Edition tier at the point the year closes, and give us a valid US postal address when we ask.

If you join partway through a year, your first book covers from when you joined to the end of that year.

We print once. If you miss the address deadline we will hold your book and mail it when you give us one, but we cannot add you to a print run that has already gone.

11 · When things break

We will keep Innerfolk running and your writing safe, and we take weekly backups to that end. But this is software, and no service is perfect.

If Innerfolk is unavailable for an extended period, tell us and we will put it right — by extending your membership, refunding you, or both.

We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Our total liability to you is limited to what you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

12 · If we stop

If we ever shut Innerfolk down, we will:

  • tell every member at least 90 days beforehand
  • refund the unused portion of everyone's membership
  • keep exports working for the whole 90 days
  • produce and mail the Annual Editions for any year already completed

We would rather commit to this in writing now than decide it under pressure later.

13 · Ending it from our side

We may close an account that breaks section 8, or that charges back a payment rather than asking for a refund. If we do, we will say why and give you a chance to export your writing first, unless the law prevents us.

14 · Changes to these terms

If we change these terms we will email every member before the change takes effect, and say what changed and why in the email itself rather than behind a link.

If a change does not suit you, cancel before it takes effect and we will refund the unused part of your year.

15 · The legal bit

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maryland.

There is no arbitration clause in these terms, and no class-action waiver. We would rather you were able to take a dispute wherever the law allows you to take it.

If any part of these terms is unenforceable, the rest still stands.

Questions about any of this? Email support@innerfolk.co and a person will answer.
